See last paragraph in "What's Your Passion" article about John Muir.

Tips for finding your life passion:

  • Think about when you felt or feel happiest.
  • Think about an activity you love doing.
  • Think or write about your values.
  • Think about what drives your decisions.
  • Do a self-assessment and identify your strengths.
  • Think about what you are going to major in in college and ask yourself, "Am I really passionate about it?"
  • Think about subjects you love to talk about.
  • Think about what you've always dreamed of doing.
Examples of Passions:
  • Being true to myself.
  • Empowering or helping others find their passion
  • Being confident in my own judgment & decisions.
  • Reading, golfing, going to movies, traveling, gardening
  • Learning something new, having an adventure
Write a Passion List:
Make a list of your passions, i.e. those things which you love most, which are most important to you, which are most critical to your happiness and well-being.  When your passions are clear, then you can create goals which are aligned with your passions and begin to create the life you choose to live.

Both passions and goals are valuable, and the first step is getting clear on your passions. Think about what you will do, be, and have when your life is ideal.

There is no right or wrong way to write a list. The purpose of the list is to provide clarity. Whatever way you write the items on your list, what's important is that YOU know what the item means to you. If you are unclear about what an item means, then reword it so it makes sense to you.

Make a list of 10 passions. Start each passion with a verb. Living your passions is a process, not a destination, so your lists should reflect that reality.

Next, narrow that list down to five.

Here is an example of what one person wrote:
  1. Supporting Domestic Abuse Survivors to achieve their dreams.
  2. Having a group of dedicated support workers to help me with my business.
  3. Travelling and meeting new friends.
  4. Living in a beautiful home.
  5. Exercising and eating healthy.
  6. Being a millionaire
  7. Surrounding myself with a support team who is similarly passionate.
  8. Being a world famous author
  9. Having an international business
  10. Being happy and adventurous.
  11. Being recognized for my work.
Final top 5 Passions:
  1. Supporting Domestic Abuse Survivors to achieve their dreams.
  2. Surrounding myself with a support team who is similarly passionate.
  3. Being recognized for my work.
  4. Being a millionaire.
  5. Travelling and meeting new friends.
